Best budget fishing gear for beginners?

Looking to get into fishing with my 10yo son. Don't want to drop a ton of money right away since I have no idea if he'll actually stick with it. Thinking maybe a basic rod and reel combo from Walmart to start, some cheap tackle box, and we'll hit the local pond. Anyone have recommendations for starter gear that won't break the bank but is still decent quality?

Honestly just grab a kids fishing kit to start. We did that with my son and he had a blast learning the basics without the pressure of expensive gear. Local pond or a fishing charter can tell you what actually works in your area too.
