Looking to take my boy on his first real fishing trip. We're in the midwest and I haven't gone fishing in like 10 years. Don't need anything fancy just want him to catch something and have fun. Any recommendations for lakes or spots that are good for beginners? Also what gear should I grab, I think my old tackle box is still in the shed somewhere.
Dude, 10 years is nothing, it'll come right back to you. Your boy's gonna have a blast just being out there with you. Maybe grab a couple basic rods from Walmart beforehand so you're not scrambling the morning of.
That's awesome man, those first trips stick with you. I'd check out some of the state parks around you, they usually have decent spots and are pretty beginner friendly. Just bring snacks and patience, that's honestly all you need.
If you're in the midwest check out some of the lakes around Madison area if you're anywhere close. Usually pretty good for taking kids fishing. Plus the docks are easier to manage than creek fishing with a young one.
First fishing trip with the boy is awesome. I took mine for the first time last year and he loved it. Just bring way more snacks than you think you'll need and let him set the pace.

Can't speak to your exact area but I've done family fishing trips all over and honestly the location matters less than making it an adventure. My boys remember the camping part and hanging out with dad more than whether we actually caught anything.
