Finally clearing out enough space to set up a proper workbench. I've got some old tools passed down from my dad and I want a good solid place to work on stuff. Nothing fancy just something sturdy that won't take up the whole garage. Has anyone built one or know what materials hold up best? Budget is around 300 bucks.
Nice, passed down tools hit different. I'd recommend getting a solid work surface first - doesn't have to be expensive - and good lighting. Made the biggest difference for me. What kind of projects are you planning to tackle?
Those old tools are awesome to have. Make sure you organize them well so you can actually find what you need when you need it. I use pegboard with labeled spots. Saves so much time and frustration.
Get yourself a solid 4x8 or 4x6 surface if you have the room. Mount a good quality vise on one end. The passed down tools are gold, but make sure your workbench is sturdy enough to handle real work. I learned that the hard way.
Nice. I built a workbench setup in my garage last year and it totally changed my whole relationship with projects around the house. What kind of work are you planning to do on it? That'll determine how much space and what kind of vise setup you need.

Workbenches are great. I'd say get it organized before you start using it or you'll end up with clutter. A tool chest nearby helps too. Having everything in one spot beats wandering the garage looking for stuff.

Get a pegboard for your wall, seriously. Changed my whole setup. Also invest in a good vise and clamp set if your old tools don't have them. Those inherited pieces are gold though, take care of them.
