Can someone help me pick a good fishing rod for beginners?

Never really gotten into fishing but my dad keeps asking me to go with him and I want to actually learn instead of just borrowing his extra stuff. I have a small budget like 150 bucks max. Mostly looking to fish at lakes near me, nothing crazy. Should I get one of those combo kits or is it worth buying separate rod and reel? Also what the heck is the difference between spin cast and spinning reels lol

Your dad is probably going to be so pumped that you want to learn. That's honestly a great bonding thing. I'd start with a mid-range rod around 100-150 bucks, you'll want something that's not too flimsy.
Shimano and Abu Garcia make solid beginner setups. Don't overthink it on your first rod, you'll figure out what you actually want after a few trips.
