Fishing trip this summer?

Thinking about taking my oldest out fishing for the first time. He's 8 now and finally old enough to sit still for more than 5 minutes. Looking for some beginner tips and good spots in the Midwest. Also need to know what gear is actually worth buying vs what's just marketing. Budget is like 200-300 bucks to start.

This is on my list too with my older one. Where are you thinking of going? That can make a huge difference for a first timer.

Eight is the perfect age for that. My oldest went at 9 and still talks about it. Pro tip: bring more snacks than you think you need and manage expectations on the fish catching part.
