Getting back into fishing after 10 years. Any tips for a rusty dad?

My dad used to take me fishing when I was a kid and I loved it but life got in the way. Now my son is asking to go and I don't even remember where to start. I've got an old rod in the garage but I think the reel is messed up. Should I replace it or get new gear? Looking for beginner friendly spots near the Chicago area too. Would love to make this a regular thing with my boy.
