Getting back into fishing after 10 years

My oldest just turned 8 and asked if we could go fishing. I haven't done it since college and realized I have no idea what I'm doing anymore. Need to figure out where to go locally and what gear I actually need. Don't want to spend a ton of money if we might not stick with it but I want to do this right for him. Any advice for getting back into it?
