Want to take my boys fishing but I sold all my old gear years ago. Looking for a decent beginner setup that won't break the bank. We've got some small lakes nearby. Should I go with a 5 or 6 ft rod? And what's the deal with all these fancy reels now? Used to just grab whatever was on the shelf. Any recommendations for someone getting back into it?
Perfect timing to get back into it with the boys. I'd start with a basic spincast or beginner spinning setup from a place like Bass Pro, usually run you $50-80 total. Way easier to manage than what we had back in the day.

How old are your boys? That matters for the gear you pick. Younger kids need simpler setups that don't frustrate them. Nothing kills interest faster than a tangled line and a kid who's mad.

Academy Sports or Walmart have decent starter kits for under 50 bucks. That's what I did and it's been holding up fine for casual trips.
