Getting back into fishing, need rod recommendations

Haven't seriously fished in like 10 years but there's a nice lake about 30 minutes from my place. Been watching some YouTube channels and I'm thinking I want to get a decent starter setup. My budget is maybe 200 bucks for rod, reel, and tackle. Mostly looking to take my older son out there on Saturday mornings. Anyone using something affordable that actually works? Or should I just bite the bullet and spend more?

Get a Shakespeare Ugly Stik if you want something that won't die on you. Had mine for years and it still works great. Plus they're not crazy expensive.

30 minutes is perfect distance. I'd start with a solid spinning rod in the 6-7 foot range, won't break the bank and it's versatile for most freshwater stuff.

Nice, lake fishing is a blast. If you're going after bass or pike I'd recommend a 6.5 to 7 foot medium action rod. Don't need to break the bank either, a decent Shimano or Abu Garcia will serve you well.

30 minutes is perfect for regular trips. I started fishing again after the kids were old enough to come along. Now it's something we do together some weekends. Cheaper than you'd think to get the basics going.

Getting back into hobbies is good for your mental health. I picked up piano with my daughter and it's been awesome having something that's just mine but also connects us. Fishing will be your thing.

Check what fish are in that lake first. Makes a difference on what rod and setup you actually want. Some places have great smallmouth, others you're better off with different gear.
