Golf membership prices are absolutely insane now

Called around to see about joining a local club and apparently they want 5 grand a year PLUS an initiation fee that's basically another year of membership. I get it it's nice to have reserved tee times but come on. Been hitting the public courses for the last 20 years and honestly the greens are pretty decent these days. Anyone else just given up on the whole membership thing or am I being cheap
