Need recommendations for fishing spots near the city

Looking to take my son fishing this spring and I don't want to drive 2 hours like I used to. Are there any decent spots within 20 mins of downtown that have bass or catfish? He's 9 and gets bored easy so needs to be where you can actually catch something. Used to be into it a lot more but haven't gone in years.

How old is your son? That matters a lot for what spots work. Young kids do better with easier-to-catch stuff and safe access. There might be some urban ponds that are stocked.

Are you in a decent sized city? Even small urban areas usually have some decent spots within 30 minutes. My son and I found a river about 20 minutes out that's perfect for catfish.

This is such a cool thing to do with your son. The drive is half the experience honestly but I get wanting to keep it reasonable. Check out local fishing forums or Facebook groups for your area, people always know the secret spots.
