Need suggestions for man cave sound system

Got the TV situation handled but my old stereo sounds like garbage. Want something decent for movies and music that won't cost me a fortune. Thinking like 5.1 setup or maybe just a good soundbar? This is probably obvious to some of you but I'm not an audio guy. What do normal people actually get?
