Thinking about getting back into fishing

Haven't been in like 5 years since the kids were born. Buddy invited me out next month and I'm actually excited about it. Might take my oldest kid next year too, he's asking about it. Gonna need to replace a lot of gear though. Is it worth investing in a decent setup or should I just rent something first to see if I'm still into it?
