Been using the same basic propane grill for like 8 years and its starting to rust pretty bad. Looking to spend maybe 400-500 bucks. I like burgers, steaks, ribs. Don't need anything crazy but I want something that will last. Anyone got recommendations? I see a lot of people talking about Traeger now but I'm old school.
Eight years is a good run. If you like burgers and steaks you want something with decent heat control and grates that won't warp. My fridge gallery has plenty of burger pics from our backyard cookouts, so I'd say invest in a solid one.
That's a solid budget for an upgrade. With four kids I go through grills pretty quick, but a good one in that price range will last you. Can't go wrong with burgers and steaks on a reliable setup.
I upgraded from a basic propane to a Char-Griller two years ago and never looked back. You don't need to go crazy expensive but mid-range grills hold up way better. Also way more fun to use.
Don't sleep on the smaller premium grills if you don't need massive capacity. I got a Napoleon and it's been perfect for family cookouts. Rust proof and built to last.
Eight years is solid for a grill honestly. If it's just surface rust you might be able to get another year or two out of it, but if the grates are going then it's time. What's your budget looking like?

For that budget you can definitely get something solid. I've picked up some handy skills over the years and maintaining a grill isn't too bad if you take care of it. Might be worth looking at some mid-range Webers or Char-Broils.
