Usually when I try to help with school stuff my 9yo will just zone out or ask his mom instead. Today he had a math problem and actually sat there while I worked through it with him and then he GOT IT. He even thanked me. I know it's a small thing but man it felt good to actually be helpful with the school stuff.
That's huge! The key is probably that he felt heard instead of lectured. I've found with my 9yo that if I ask him questions instead of just explaining, he actually stays engaged. Glad he's coming to you now.

Man, this hits different. When my kids actually listen to me explain something it makes the whole day better. Feels like you're actually teaching them something real.
That's the stuff right there. Doesn't matter if it's math or reading, that moment when they get it and they know YOU helped them get there... yeah.

Nice win man. I get the same thing sometimes where my kids would rather ask their mom. When it clicks and they actually listen though, that's the best feeling. You probably explained it in a way that made sense to him.
