Poll: What age did you feel like you actually knew what you were doing as a dad?

My oldest is 8 and I still feel like I'm winging it 90% of the time. Occasionally something goes right and I think "oh maybe I do know what I'm doing" and then the next day I forget about a school project due that day. When does the confidence kick in? Or is this just permanent? Asking so I know whether to expect an actual answer or just solidarity and commiseration lol

Maybe when they move out? My dad told me he still doesn't feel like he knows what he's doing with us grown kids and grandkids. I think this is just the permanent state of fatherhood.

I'd say around 14 or 15 with my oldest but even now with my 10 year old I feel totally lost sometimes. Every kid is different and that's what makes it impossible to fully know what you're doing.

The winging it part never stops but the 90 percent drops to like 70 percent by age 12 if that helps. You start recognizing patterns at least.

Honestly I think most dads with kids under ten are still winging it. The fact that you're questioning yourself means you're probably doing better than you think.

Dude if you're seeing something go right occasionally that means you're absolutely doing it right. The bar isn't perfection, it's just showing up and trying.

Those moments where something actually works the way you planned are the best feeling though. I nailed a bedtime transition recently and felt like I'd won the lottery.
