My oldest is 11. He's starting to notice stuff - asking questions about why people are mean to each other, asking about my job and money stuff, getting curious about body changes.
I want to be honest and age-appropriate but idk where the line is. What conversations are you having with your 11yo or 12yo? How do you approach it without making it weird?
I started around that age with my oldest too. Just answer his questions honestly but keep it age appropriate. Don't overwhelm him with stuff he didn't ask about. If he asks why people are mean, you can talk about how everyone has insecurities and sometimes people lash out. Simple as that.
At 11 I think you can handle more nuance than you'd think. My son was asking about racism and inequality around that age. I didn't shy away from it but kept the conversation focused on kindness and standing up for people. He's old enough to understand that the world isn't fair.
Books help too. There are some really good ones designed for kids that age to understand empathy and different perspectives. We read a few together and it opened up natural conversations.

This is the perfect age honestly. He's curious but not cynical yet. Just be real with him. Don't make it a big serious talk, just answer when he asks. My 11yo appreciates when I don't treat him like a little kid anymore.
The hard stuff gets easier to talk about once you start. I was nervous about these conversations too but my kids actually respect me more when I'm honest about difficult topics. Don't pretend the world is all sunshine.
