Question: How do you guys handle the 'can we get a pet' conversation?

My kids (5 and 8) have been relentless about getting a dog. My wife is on board now but I'm worried about the commitment. We travel maybe 3-4 times a year and both work full time. Has anyone actually gone through with this? What breed if so? Worried I'm gonna be the one doing 80% of the work even though that's what they promised lol
