Question: What's a good age to start letting kids handle their own money?

My 10 year old keeps asking for stuff at the store and I'm tired of the negotiations lol. Been thinking about giving him a small allowance so he learns the value of money instead of just asking parents for everything. But is 10 too young? Should I wait? Any of you guys doing allowance? How much are you giving and what are the expectations?
