My son's friend's mom just did an entire escape room party for 8 kids. AN ESCAPE ROOM. For 8-year-olds. I'm just doing pizza and cake in my backyard and some parents looked at me like I had three heads. The bar is insane now, man.
Pizza and cake in the backyard is genuinely what most kids actually want. The elaborate stuff is for the parents' Instagram. Your son will remember hanging out with friends way more than some 'experience.'
Dude yes. Remember when birthday parties were legitimately just ... parties? Now everyone's trying to one-up each other. Do the backyard thing and spend the money you save on better cake instead.
The escape room mom is definitely that type. Don't let her set the precedent in your friend group or suddenly everyone's expected to get crazy expensive. Backyard pizza is peak.
How old is your son turning? At younger ages backyard is perfect. At like 11+ they start wanting more 'cool' stuff and backyard gets harder to pull off.

An escape room for 8-year-olds is absolutely insane lol. Kids that age don't have the problem-solving skills to actually solve puzzles - they just get frustrated and the parents end up doing it.
