My 13yo just casually told me about his day - like really told me about it - during the drive home. Genuine conversation, not one-word answers. I think something shifted this year. He's becoming an actual person with opinions and stories instead of just my kid. It's wild and a little bittersweet? Anyone else noticing this transition with their older kids?
This is why I started taking the kids on solo drives just to listen. No agenda, no homework help needed, just actual conversation. Game changer for our relationship.
The car is magical for this. No eye contact, he doesn't feel like he's being interviewed, just conversation happening. My teenage daughter opens up way more on drives than she ever does sitting at the dinner table.
Enjoy this phase. It goes fast. My oldest is 16 now and we still get these moments but they're fewer and farther between. Appreciate when they actually want to talk to you.
The backseat thing is real. My 8 year old said something yesterday that made me realize he's actually thinking about complicated stuff and just needed the right setting to talk about it. Car rides unlocked something.

That's the stuff right there. My 11 year old is starting to do this more and it's honestly better than any parenting book. You're not interrogating him about his day anymore, he's just telling you because he wants to.
