Yeah, so that happened. My 6yo came home and asked me what porn was because apparently some kid at school mentioned it. I have no idea how to handle this conversation. Do I just shut it down? Do I explain? He's way too young for this. How have other parents navigated these awkward talks when kids bring home stuff they overheard?
Kids these days are basically googling everything. You almost have to assume they're going to learn about this stuff from someone, so just being prepared with a calm response is probably the best move.
Oh man, this is the conversation nobody prepares you for. My advice is keep it super simple and age-appropriate. Basically told my kid it's something adults look at privately and we don't need to talk about it more right now. He seemed satisfied with that.
The fact that kids are learning this stuff at school now is wild. When I was 6 I had no idea what any of that was. Times have definitely changed.
Just went through this with our 5yo last month. We kept it super brief and honest without getting into details. Kids move on to the next thing pretty quick if you don't make it weird.
