9yo wants a phone - am I crazy for saying no?

So my son is begging for a phone because ALL his friends have one apparently. He's in 4th grade. My wife thinks I'm being too strict but honestly I don't see why he needs one yet. He has a tablet for educational stuff and that's plenty. The only reason he wants it is to play Fortnite with his buddies and text in their group chat. Am I totally out of touch here or is this reasonable?
