Best educational apps that don't feel like schoolwork?

8yo is into nature stuff so looking for apps that teach about animals, ecology, that kind of thing. Not one of those "educational games" that's just math flashcards disguised with cartoony graphics. Something actually engaging where he'll learn without realizing it. Recommendations? He's on iPad so iOS preferred but Android works too.

Tried Duolingo with my kids and hated it but my daughter got obsessed with this app called Seek that's made by the same company. It's all nature/animal based and she actually asks to use it.

We got a subscription to CuriosityStream and our kids actually watch the nature documentaries on it. Might be overkill but beats random apps.

iNaturalist is perfect for an 8yo who likes nature. It's basically a photo app where kids can identify bugs, plants, animals and it feels like a game not homework.

My son loves Puffin Academy which has nature videos and stuff. Not an app technically but works great on tablets. Way better than the usual educational app garbage.

If your kid likes animals check out Creature Quest. It's got that game element so he's actually motivated to use it and learning happens as a side effect.
