My son keeps asking for a gaming headset so he can play with his friends online and I'm trying to find something that's not gonna destroy his hearing or cost me $200. Also want it to have a mute button so I don't have to listen to him and his friends screaming in the background all night lol. Any recommendations?
I went with the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 1 for my son when he turned 8. Good sound quality, comfortable for long sessions, and the microphone is clear so his friends can actually hear him. Not the cheapest option but held up well after a year of heavy use.
My kids have been using basic HyperX Cloud Stinger 2 headsets and honestly they're solid. Not too expensive so if he grows out of them or breaks them it's not a huge deal. At 8 he might outgrow gaming interests pretty quick anyway.

Just a heads up - make sure whatever you get has volume limiting features. A lot of kids headsets come with caps at 85-90 dB which is important for their hearing. My daughter had regular headsets first and I was always worried about the volume creeping up.
