My oldest is getting his first phone soon and I want to keep an eye on things without being that creepy dad who monitors everything. Looking for something that blocks inappropriate stuff and limits usage but doesn't feel invasive. Any recommendations that actually work?

Apple's Screen Time or Google Family Link are pretty standard. They let you see usage without feeling like Big Brother. Talk to your kid about it though so there's no sneaky feeling.
I use Google Family Link and honestly it's not creepy at all. You can set app limits, see what they're doing without being invasive about it. Feels like a good balance between keeping them safe and letting them have some independence.
Being the creepy parent is way better than having your kid in a dangerous situation online. I'd lean toward knowing what's going on. Family Link is solid for that without going overboard.
Just remember that some monitoring is actually responsible parenting, not helicopter parenting. First phone is huge. Set clear expectations early and you won't have to sneak around.
