My 10yo just got an Xbox for his birthday and I want to make sure he can't rack up charges, can't play stuff that's too mature, and has reasonable playtime limits. Apple stuff is pretty straightforward but gaming consoles feel more complicated. What are you all using that actually works? He's a good kid but I need some guardrails in place.
Xbox Game Pass for Kids is solid and keeps costs down. As for controls, the built-in parental settings on Xbox are actually pretty robust for blocking in-game purchases.
Family Link is your friend here. You can set spending limits, see playtime, and control what he accesses. Took me 20 minutes to set up and saved me potential headaches.
Also set up the Xbox account so he can't change passwords or settings without your approval. The charge thing scared me too till I locked it all down.
Microsoft Family Safety is built right into Xbox and it's actually really solid. You can set spending limits, content restrictions, and screen time all from your phone. Should cover everything you're looking for.
Good call setting this up right away. I didn't do it immediately with my oldest's Switch and he accidentally spent real money on stupid stuff. Not fun.

For Switch, parental controls are straightforward through the settings menu. For Xbox, definitely use their family settings. Both systems let you lock down purchases pretty tight.
