Caught my 10 year old watching inappropriate YouTube

So I was setting up parental controls on his laptop and noticed his history had some stuff that made me real uncomfortable. I talked to him about it and he said his friends showed it to him at school. I'm trying not to overreact but also don't want to be naive about this. We're putting serious restrictions in place now but I'm wondering if I should have been monitoring this sooner. Any advice on how to handle the conversation without shaming him?

This is why I'm terrified of giving my kids unrestricted internet access. How old is he and how did he even find that stuff? Asking because I want to know what to watch for with mine.

I'm dealing with similar stuff right now and it's wild how easy it is for them to find things. Did you have a conversation with him about it after or just lock it down?

Yeah this is the scary part of having kids online. What kind of stuff was it? The parental controls thing is tricky because you want to keep them safe but also need to figure out what level of monitoring is right.
