Caught oldest looking at stuff he shouldn't on YouTube

Found out my 11 year old was searching for some questionable content on YouTube. We had a talk about it but now I'm paranoid. I set up YouTube Kids but he figured out how to get back to regular YouTube. Considering just taking away the tablet but he needs it for homework. What's the best way to actually protect them without driving myself crazy checking everything?

Yeah at 11 that's pretty normal curiosity but definitely needs addressing. I had the same talk with my oldest. Keep it factual, not shameful. YouTube's algorithm is crazy - kids stumble on stuff without even trying. Maybe set up parental controls?

Good on you for handling it with a talk instead of just freaking out. That's the right move. You might want to look into YouTube Kids or enable restricted mode on his account. At least it buys you time before the algorithm gets too weird.

This happened to us too. The key is not making him feel like he did something evil - it's curiosity at that age. But yeah definitely need to have ongoing conversations about what's appropriate. And definitely use parental controls.
