He walks to school now and I like the idea of him being able to text me if something goes wrong. But I also don't want him distracted or exposed to stuff online. Looking at kids phones that have limited features. Any recommendations or should I just wait another year or two?
Safety is legit important but 8 might still be young. What about a GPS watch first? That way he can still reach you and you can track him, but you're not dealing with all the other phone stuff yet.
Not crazy at all but maybe consider a basic phone that only calls and texts? My nephew has one of those and his parents feel way better knowing he can reach out without him having access to apps and all that.
The safety angle makes sense, I get it. But I'd honestly wait another year or two if you can. Once they have a phone, good luck getting them to put it down. The walking to school window is pretty small anyway.

My 8yo walks to school and we started with a simple flip phone just for emergencies. Helped me sleep better at night knowing he could call if needed. He's not interested in it otherwise which is perfect.
