Educational apps that actually aren't garbage?

Looking for:
- Math practice (not Khan Academy, my 8yo hates it)
- Reading/vocabulary building
- Maybe something with a little fun factor so he'll actually use it
- Prefer no ads or at least minimal
Willing to pay. We've tried like 8 different apps and they're all either too babyish or boring. Help me out?
