Found out my 13 year old has a Discord server

Not sure how I feel about this. He says all his friends use it to chat and play games together. On one hand it's cool he's into gaming culture with peers. On the other hand I have no idea who these people really are. We set up his account together, I'm following along on the server stuff, and we talked about not giving out personal info. Trying to find the balance between trusting him and actually being a parent here.

Discord itself is fine honestly. Yeah there's some weird corners of the internet but all his friends are using it for the same reason. Set some boundaries about screen time and what kinds of servers he should join and you're probably okay.

I'd be more concerned about who's moderating the server and what the actual content is rather than Discord existing. But yes he should tell you these things. Have a conversation about online safety instead of the platform itself.

This is actually pretty normal for 13 year olds these days. Way better than him hiding it from you. Maybe ask to join the server as a lurker? Not to spy but so you understand what he's doing. My kid appreciated that I was trying to understand his world.
