Found out my kid's getting TikTok videos from 'private accounts'

So my 10 year old has a friend who sets up these 'private' TikTok accounts to watch videos her parents won't let her see. My daughter is seeing whatever content comes through and I have no idea what's actually being shown. I blocked TikTok on her device but she can just use her friend's phone. This is frustrating. Are there parental controls that actually work or am I fighting a losing battle?

This is exactly the stuff I worry about. A 10 year old shouldn't be accessing any TikTok content from 'private accounts' - that's just adults trying to get around parental controls. Have you talked to the other parent about this?

Yeah that's a problem. The 'private account' thing is just kids trying to hide from parents. You might need to have the uncomfortable conversation with the other parents about what their kids are actually watching.

Yeah the friend's parents probably have no idea what's going on either. This might be one of those situations where you need to loop them in. I know it's awkward but better than your kid seeing stuff they shouldn't.

10 is still pretty young to be navigating this stuff. What kind of videos are we talking about here? That would help determine how much you need to intervene versus just monitor.

This is a real concern. My kids are 10 and 8 and I've noticed the same thing happening. The 'private account' workaround is basically defeating the whole parental control purpose. Have you tried sitting down with your kid and just asking what they're watching? I find my kids are more honest when I'm curious instead of angry.

Private accounts are still TikTok and still have all the same issues. I'd seriously consider pulling access from that friend or at least having a hard conversation with their parents. That's a line that shouldn't be crossed.

I'd be having two conversations - one with your kid about why that's not okay, and one with their friend's parents. They need to know what's happening. Sounds like they're trying to bypass content restrictions.
