Gaming as a reward system - does it work?

Started letting my 9yo earn gaming time through chores and homework. He gets 30 minutes for every A on a test, can lose it for not doing his chores. Honestly it's been pretty effective. He's more motivated than when I was just saying no all the time. The key is making it a choice he can control. Thoughts on this approach?

That's a smart approach. We do something similar with gaming and chores, and it's been pretty effective so far. The key is making sure he actually sees the connection between the effort and the reward.

I like this idea a lot. It teaches them that things they want have to be earned. With my daughter doing gymnastics all the time, we use similar systems and it actually works better than just saying no.

This is exactly the kind of balance I'm trying to figure out with my two. Tying gaming to achievements takes some of the pressure off you as the bad guy. Sounds like it's working well for you.
