Quick question - is Fortnite still the thing kids care about? My 9yo wants it and idk if I'm overreacting about the battle pass stuff and in-game purchases. What's the actual concern here?

At 9 most kids care more about playing with friends than the cosmetics tbh. The battle pass stuff is annoying but the game itself is fine. More concern would be screen time limits than the purchases
Fortnite is still huge with that age but the battle pass concern is legitimate. It's $10 every 10 weeks and the game literally dangles cosmetics in front of them constantly. Not catastrophic but worth setting a hard boundary on.
lol imagine if we had Fortnite when we were 9. We would've been broke from the arcade
I let mine play but zero in-game spending. The cosmetics don't affect gameplay so I explained that to him and surprisingly he got it. He cares about winning, not looking cool.
My 9yo plays Fortnite too. The battle pass itself isn't the evil - it's that once they start one they feel like they NEED to finish it. We set it up so I buy one per season and that's it. Saved us from the constant 'can I get vbucks' conversation.
The real concern is the FOMO mechanics. The battle pass expires, limited skins drop, always something new. It's designed to make kids feel like they're missing out. That's the manipulation piece.
what's the ACTUAL concern you have? Like is it the money, the time spent, or the social pressure? Different answers depending on that
The battle pass is basically a $10 subscription that makes kids feel like they're unlocking stuff constantly. It's designed to be addictive. If you do let him play, maybe offer to pay for ONE battle pass a season and that's it
Fortnite is still the thing yeah, but your concern about battle pass isn't overreacting. Set a hard limit on monthly spending ($0 is a valid answer) and stick to it. The FOMO is real and the game is designed to exploit it

lol the actual thing kids care about changes like every 6 months but yeah Fortnite is still dominant in that age bracket. Roblox is maybe even bigger now honestly
