Gaming is actually a problem now

My 14 year old plays video games for like 6 hours a day when we let him. Says he's just chilling with his friends online but it's gotten out of hand. Grades are slipping, he doesn't want to do family stuff anymore, just wants to get back to gaming. We took his console away last week and he lost it completely. I don't want to be the dad that drives him away but this isn't healthy. Is this normal teenage stuff or should I be more concerned?

Yeah, 6 hours is rough. I've been there with my oldest and had to set some hard limits. We do screen time after homework and chores are done, and honestly it helped when we made other stuff appealing too - got him into a sport with his buddies instead.
