Gaming is becoming a problem with my teenage son

He's up til midnight most nights gaming instead of sleeping and his grades are slipping. I set limits but he just sneaks around them. We took his console away last week and now there's tension between us. I don't want to be that guy who just bans everything but I also need him to actually function at school. How have other dads handled gaming addiction? Is it even real or am I overreacting?
