How do I explain YouTube algorithm to a 10 year old

My son got really into some youtuber and now he just keeps watching recommended videos for hours. He doesn't understand that YouTube is literally designed to keep him watching as long as possible. I want him to understand this stuff but how do you explain that to a kid without sounding like a conspiracy guy? Also worried he's starting to copy the youtuber's behavior which is... not great.

Yeah the algorithm is wild. I had to have a real talk with my oldest about how YouTube wants to keep him watching as long as possible. Setting time limits helped more than explaining it though.

The recommendation rabbit hole is real with that age. We've had to set pretty firm screen time rules because once they get hooked on a youtuber it's endless.
