How do you monitor your teen's phone without being creepy?

My oldest is 14 now and has a phone. I want to know what he's doing online and who he's talking to but I also don't want to be that dad who's always checking his every move. We have some parental controls set up but I'm not sure if I'm doing this right. Is monitoring his texts too much? What about location sharing? I want to keep him safe without making him feel like I don't trust him. Looking for advice on finding that balance.

The creepy factor is real but so is your job as a parent. I'd say be transparent about it. Tell him you're going to have visibility into his accounts and why. Then actually have conversations about what he's doing instead of just checking in silently. That's the non-creepy version.

I've been wrestling with this exact thing with my 14 year old. The key is being honest about why you're monitoring. We told our son that it's not about not trusting him, it's about protecting him from stuff that's out there. We use parental controls but I also try to just... talk to him about what he's seeing online.

I think the key is being upfront about it instead of spying. Tell him what you're doing and why, set some ground rules together, and he's less likely to resent you for it.

We went with open conversation and spot checks rather than sneaky monitoring. Let him know you trust him but you're keeping an eye on things. Seems to work better than the creepy approach.

This is the million dollar question right now. I'm trying to balance trust with safety. What's helped me is treating it less like surveillance and more like guidance. We talk about digital citizenship at home and he knows I can see things if I need to, but I'm not constantly checking. Does that make sense?
