My wife thinks our 5 year old watches too much youtube and I think shes being too strict. Like hes only getting maybe 1.5 hours a day total. The AAP says one hour but is that realistic? He watches some educational stuff but also those weird toy unboxing videos. What do you guys let your kids watch and for how long?
Yeah man, the AAP recommends like an hour a day max for that age, so 1.5 is on the higher side. I'd probably side with your wife on this one, but the good news is it's not a huge adjustment to get there.
We've been through this battle with all four of ours, and honestly the sweet spot we found was being flexible about it rather than rigid. Some days we go over, some we don't. What matters more is what he's watching and whether you guys are on the same page together.

At 5 years old, my kids were pretty happy with way less screen time than I expected. Maybe try replacing some of that YouTube time with something active you can do with him, gets everyone moving and keeps the peace with the wife too.
