How much screen time is actually okay for a 4 year old

I let my son watch iPad videos while I make dinner and I feel guilty about it. My wife thinks it's fine for like 30 mins a day, her sister says any screen time is basically brain damage. What's the actual science on this? He's smart, pays attention to us, plays outside. I'm not trying to let him zone out all day but I also think a little bit isn't going to ruin him. What do other parents actually do?

30 minutes while cooking dinner is totally reasonable and you shouldn't feel guilty about it. Four year olds need parents who can actually function, and a little screen time for that is fine.

With four kids I learned pretty quick that some screen time doesn't ruin them. The difference is what comes after - talk about what he watched while you eat dinner together and you're golden.
