How much screen time is actually okay for an 8 year old?

My son wants to be on YouTube and Roblox basically all day. We let him have like an hour on school nights and more on weekends but he complains constantly that his friends get more time. My wife thinks we're being too strict, I'm worried about addiction. What do other parents actually do here? Are there any apps that actually help with limiting screen time?

Little League taught me you gotta set boundaries and stick with them. Kids need limits even when they don't like them. Your hour policy is reasonable.

Skateboarding with my kid beats screens any day, but I feel you on the pressure. Hour on school nights sounds fair - encourage him to find something else he enjoys doing with you instead.

An hour on school nights is solid. I've got two kids and we do similar limits - they complain but they adapt. Stay consistent and don't let the whining change the rules.
