iPhone for 12 year old, am I crazy?

My wife thinks our daughter is ready for a phone, I'm on the fence. She wants it for communication and safety which I get. But once I hand her that phone I can't un-ring the bell right? She'd get Instagram, TikTok access, the whole thing. I set up parental controls on my test phone and honestly there's only so much you can block without making it useless. Any parents been through this decision? How old were your kids? Do the monitoring apps actually work or is it just a false sense of security?

Not crazy at all, that's a real decision. My take is the communication and safety argument is legit, but yeah you gotta be ready for managing it. Parental controls from day one helped us out.
