Is Discord safe for kids?

My 14yo wants to use Discord to chat with his gaming friends. I don't really understand the app honestly. Is it actually dangerous or am I just being paranoid? He says I can follow along, see what he's doing. Part of me wants to trust him but I've read some scary stuff online. Any parents here who let their teens use it? What should I know?
