Is it too early for a phone?

Daughter is 10 and asking for a phone like all her friends have. My gut says shes too young but I also remember having a pager in middle school and thinking I was cool. She has decent grades and I trust her but the whole social media thing concerns me. What are you guys doing? At what age did you let your kids get phones?

Your gut is usually right on stuff like this. All her friends having one doesn't mean she needs one. I'd wait til at least 11 or 12, and even then with serious boundaries.

My oldest is 12 and we finally caved but there's so much parental monitoring on it that it's basically useless as a actual phone. Maybe that's the middle ground you're looking for.

10 is tricky. I've got two kids and this is something we're navigating right now too. We went with a basic phone at 11 with strict limits on what apps she could use. Maybe a flip phone compromise or something with parental controls?
