Is it weird that my 7yo plays Roblox?

Genuinely asking because I feel like I'm the only parent who lets my daughter play this. Everyone at her school seems to be doing it but when I mention it people get weird about the "chat" and "stranger danger." We use family pairing, she can't chat with randoms, and I check in on what games she's playing. She likes the creative building stuff, not the multiplayer hanging out. Am I being naive here or is it actually fine?

nah you're not alone, basically every kid her age plays it. the chat thing is genuinely why we limit it but it's not banned. just monitor it and teach her not to talk to randoms

people are weird about roblox bc they heard one story about some kid talking to a stranger online and now they think it's basically a pedophile simulator. it can be sketchy if unsupervised but so can a lot of things

The fact that you're even thinking about this and monitoring it means you're doing better than half the parents who just hand their kid a tablet and ignore it

We do "open door" policy - she plays in the living room and I check in every 10-15 min, ask what she's building, who she's talking to if anyone. She knows the rule about never giving out any info or adding random friends. Seems to work

My 8yo plays it and honestly some of the games are actually pretty creative. The chat is definitely the thing to watch but a 7yo shouldn't be chatting with randos anyway - that's a you problem not a roblox problem

Roblox is super normal for that age. Yeah the chat thing is real and worth setting boundaries on - you can turn it off in parental controls so she can only chat with friends she already has. That's what most parents actually do.

It's literally not weird at all. It's one of the biggest games for that age group. The chat concerns are valid but manageable with parental controls. You're fine.

The people getting weird about it are probably just not familiar with it or read one reddit post about online safety. Standard helicopter parent energy. If you're monitoring it, it's fine.

My 8yo plays Roblox constantly. People get weird about it because of the social/chat features but honestly limiting chat to approved friends and checking in on what games she's playing = normal parenting, not weird parenting.

Your daughter is not the only one at her school playing this lol. Everyone acts weird about it at pickup but then their kids go home and play the exact same games. You're doing the monitoring thing so you're actually ahead of most.

We let my daughter play but I definitely monitor which games and I check the parental control settings regularly. The chat filter is important but once you set it up it's pretty safe.

everyone at our school plays it too and the one time my son tried to add someone random I saw the username was literally something like 'xxx_hotty_2009' so yeah. supervision is key
