Is YouTube Kids actually safe?

My 5 year old has been watching YouTube Kids for like an hour a day and I'm starting to wonder if I'm doing this right. I read some stuff online about how the algorithm still shows weird content sometimes even with the kid filters on. Anyone else use it? What's your experience been like?
