Just caught my 8 year old watching inappropriate YouTube at his friends house

Some of the stuff that gets recommended to kids on YouTube is absolutely wild. He was watching some dude doing weird challenges that were definitely not age appropriate. I've now locked his YouTube to a kids profile but apparently there's ways around it? How do you guys actually monitor this without being a totalitarian parent. I want him to have some independence but not get exposed to garbage.

This is why we don't let ours just browse YouTube unsupervised. It only takes one swipe to go from something innocent to something completely inappropriate. Good catch. The friend's parents probably have no idea what their kids are seeing.

That's the scariest part about YouTube for kids. The algorithm doesn't care about age appropriateness. Time to have a conversation with him about what he saw and maybe check in with that friend's parents too.

YouTube's recommendation algorithm is basically just trying to get kids hooked on the weirdest stuff possible. We had to go with a kids' version and I still supervise it. What was he watching?
