Just discovered my son was watching stuff he shouldn't on youtube

Found out my 12yo had been watching some pretty inappropriate content on youtube while I thought he was watching gaming videos. I feel like I failed here. We had the talk about it but I don't know how to prevent it without basically becoming his phone police. Anyone use parental controls that actually work? I tried youtube kids but he's too old for that now and feels like I don't trust him which maybe I don't.

This is exactly why I set up screens in the common areas only. I know that's not always realistic but YouTube can recommend some gnarly stuff to kids. At least you found out now rather than later.

Man this happened to me last year with my older kid. Had to sit him down and talk about it without making him feel like he was in trouble. Then I set up parental controls and we had the awkward conversation about what's appropriate. It sucks but you caught it which is what matters.

This happens to more of us than you'd think. The important part is you found out and can now have a conversation with him about it. Single parent here so I feel the guilt but we're doing our best.

You didn't fail man, you caught it and that's what matters. I went through this with my kid and had to have the talk about what's appropriate. It's awkward but necessary. YouTube Kids filter helps too if you haven't set that up.

YouTube kids is supposed to be better but honestly nothing is perfect. I spot check what my daughter is watching on the regular account now. The algorithm pushes some weird stuff on kids. Definitely lock it down with parental controls if you haven't already.
