Just got my 9yo her first phone and I'm already regretting it

So we caved and got Emma a basic iPhone for her birthday (she's 9, going into 4th grade). Main reason was so she could text us when she starts walking to her friend's house after school. But now I'm seeing her hunched over it constantly, and I realized I have NO idea how to set up parental controls properly. I downloaded Screen Time but honestly the settings are confusing af. Anyone using iOS parental controls that actually works? She keeps finding workarounds somehow.
